It’s a way for a municipality to collect money on something else. Realistically, its supposed to be so if your dog ever gets loose, animal control knows who they belong to.

Well, FWIW I live in NJ and its the same way here. Registering the pup isn’t too expensive. I think its like $22 per dog. Now if you’re caught without registered dog its a ticket and a late fee to register said dog.

Well Seattle has more dogs than children, and the no kill shelter lobby is very well represented here, so I’m sure the city does spend a lot of money it doesn’t have on shelters. The licenses reduce shelter population by helping runaway dogs get home, and the fees help pay for the rest.

huh, interesting. We don’t have that in Tennessee, but both of our pups are micro chipped

that’s actually quite interesting. TN does not have that, but I could see it being helpful

We’ve got that in El Paso, too. The county license requirement is tied to your dog being current on their annual rabies vaccine, in addition to them having a record of who owns which doggo. In an effort to control unwanted pet populations, the cost of the license is tied to your dog’s reproductive capacity. The license costs something like $20/year for a spayed or neutered dog, but over $100/year if doggo is intact.
